Okay, so I’ve been meaning to put this pattern up ever since I finished my own hat and was glad I wrote things down as I worked. This pattern is untested, other than by my own hands, so if anyone using it has questions, they can send them to me on my Ravelry account, dontmakemeover. On to the pattern…
Yarn: DK weight yarn in olive green, white, gold, red, and black.
Hook: I used G, but since you’re doing a basic bucket increase for the crown it’s pretty easy to check gauge against your head.
Notes: Do not skip a stitch when ch 1, do when ch 2.
Sizing: Measurements for 22.5 in. head. Sizing starts out with basic bucket increase, so check against your own head. Chart pattern works if you stop at any even row. Still, numbers for size I made…
1. Start with green. Ch 2, sc 6 in second ch from hook. Join.
2. Ch 1, 2 sc in each st. Join. (12)
3. Ch 1, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (18)
4. Ch 1, (sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (24)
5. Ch 1, (sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (30)
6. Ch 1, (sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (36)
7. Ch 1, (sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (42)
8. Ch 1, (sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next st) around. Join. (48)

15-21. Start chart row here! Ch 1, sc around. Join. Repeat, following chart. Chart will work if sc around is in multiple of 4, any even row.
Note: If you find that your chart stitches are jogging a bit too far to one side and you’re losing the triangle shapes, I suggest shifting the single white stitches one to the left from where they are. I won’t change the chart, because it might not be a problem for everyone, but I found that it evens out the shapes for me.
22. Ch 1, sc around in white. Join.
23-24. Ch 1, sc around in gold. Join.
25. Ch 1, sc around in green. Join. (Green to end)
26. Ch 2, dc around. Join.
27-30. Ch 2, (fpdc in next 3 st, bpdc in 1) around. Join.

31. Join green anywhere, ch 1, sc in next 51 dc. Turn.
32-35. Ch 1, sc across 51 st. Turn.
36. Ch 1, sc first 12 st. Turn.
37. Ch 1, dec. in first 2 st, sc 8, dec in last 2 st. Turn. (10)
38. Ch 1, sc across. Turn.
39. Ch 1, dec. in first 2 st, sc 6, dec. in last 2 st. Turn (8)
40. Ch 1, sc even. Turn.
41. Ch 1, dec. in first 2 st, sc 4, dec. in last 2 st. Turn. (6)
42. Ch 1, sc even. Turn.
43. Ch 1, dec. in first 2 st, sc 2, dec. in last 2 st. Turn. (4)
44. Ch 1, sc even. Turn.
45. Ch 4, sl st in 4th sc of previous row. (You will tie the braids through this loop)
(Second earflap, join on other edge of 51 st from row 31, follow pattern for rows 36-45)
When done with second earflap, crochet sc even around entire edge.
Take 6 strands of each color in roughly double the length you want the braids to eventually be, split in 2 bunches. Feed each bunch through an ear loop and braid, knotting at the end.
Suggestion: Use more green than any other color for the braids.

Hey, could you let me know how I do the chart row(s)? Is it just sc but changing colors every stitch? I’m kind of new to crochet, so not sure how to do it. I really love this pattern and would love to try it out 🙂 I just need to know how to do the chart row 😛
It’s sc, carrying the unused color under the color your using. It doesn’t show up because you should only be using 2 colors at a time.
In the 3rd row of the colorwork, it looks like you should have 3 colors going all on one row. Whit black and red. Am I wrong on this?

Hi there, Thanks for the link! I’m now right at the bottom of the ribbing. Just one more question, if you don’t mind. Are the “32-35. Ch 1, sc across 51 st. Turn.” rows meant to make the bottom of the back of the hat longer than the front? I ask because one side of my hat is kind of ugly (I adjusted the size for my large head and the chart rows and ribbing ended up uneven, oops!) so I want to make sure I join the yarn in a way that the ugly part of my hat will end up in the back when it’s finished.
Yes, the idea is to add a little extra to to back because when I first made it I felt like my neck was more exposed than I’d like.

I think this pattern is genius! My friends and I are HUGE Harry Potter fans and have been looking for a way to get a hold of those hats. They are going to be SO jealous when they see me wearing it (As long as it turns out right) 😉 lol. Thanks for putting up the crochet pattern for it. I’ve seen tons of knitting patterns but I’m not much of a knitter. 😀
How did you get the chart part to zig zag? Did you switch back and forth between the colors?
Yes, because each row only uses two colors at a time (as far as I remember), I just work overtop the strand I”m not using, effectively hiding that working yarn within the stitch of the other color and carrying it over to be used in the next stitch. I learned how to do this for colorwork from some internet tutorials.

You know, there’s actually a lot of knitted versions out there. In fact, I created this one because they were all knitted and I wanted a crochet option. I don’t really knit personally, but plenty of other people have figured this one out.
